Pyrography - the art of drawing with fire

Today we will talk about pyrography - the beautiful art of drawing on wood with fire. The magic happens using a special tool called a pyrograph , which burns the design onto the surface of the wood at a very high temperature. The technique is suitable for decorating beautiful, personalized objects made of natural wood. Pyrography is a beautiful and creative hobby, suitable for both professionals and novice artists over the age of 12, so you can start right away.

The tool itself is a burner with a tip that heats up to 450 degrees. Additional attachments with different designs are often available, which are particularly suitable for applying finishing touches. A pyrograph is mainly painted on wood, but can be painted on cork and leather. The possibilities for creating beautiful, personalized gifts with this durable technique are virtually endless, especially since you have the ability to combine several different materials. You can make a beautiful rolling pin, cutting board, coasters, photo frame, all with a personalized message and a beautiful woodburn design.

Let's dwell on some peculiarities of working with a pyrograph. Above all, let's pay attention to the surface that is used - mostly wood. Regardless of the type of wood - hardwood or softwood, the important thing is that it is untreated and as smooth as possible. If there is still a defect on the surface, additional polishing with sandpaper is needed to achieve maximum smoothness. For more inexperienced pyrograph artists, it is good to start with softer woods - softwood, birch, linden. Do not push the tip too far into the wood. Once you get a feel for the instrument, you can easily switch to other woods - like oak, for example.

Provide yourself with a workplace with a heat-resistant surface and good light. Before starting work on the item, it is a good idea to test the tool on a scrap piece. An important feature is how to transfer the design to the wood.

People skilled in painting can sketch their own design directly on the surface. Use a soft pencil to draw the main lines first, then add shadows and textures. Any remaining pencil marks can easily be erased with an eraser after you've finished burning the wood. You can also transfer the design with a transfer technique and image transfer solution. In this case, print the desired motif on a laser printer - don't forget to mirror first - moisten the paper with the solution and rub into the surface with a flat and hard tool. An even easier option is to print your chosen design – just choose a suitable stamp and water-based ink and print on the wood.

Of course, do not ignore the safety instructions. Work on a fireproof surface and in good light. Always place the pyrograph on the special stand and make sure it is stable. Change the tips using tweezers and with the appliance switched off. Only put away when the tool has completely cooled down.
