Today we will show how to restore an old, worn wooden box, trying to turn it a beautiful masterpiece in a shabby - chic style. To achieve the puppet style and stylish elegance, for our project we chose decoupage in combination with Pentart's cracklyng paint.

As you can see, the box with which we will work is not in a good state. However, will turn it into a real masterpiece.

As usual, the major step before building any kind of technique is applying a layer of primer. Instead of acrylic primer, for this project we will use gesso – this is a thick paste which has a toothpaste density. In some cases, the gesso is an excellent advantage - it can repair defects in the desired surface for decoration. Because our wooden box has surface defects and wood damage, the gesso will help us pick and clear these drawbacks.

Apply the primer paste to a dense and even layer, gently smearing with a spatula. When working with wood, an unwritten rule is always to apply the products in the direction of movement of the wood streak. You will notice that the paste is spreading smoothly and easily knocks down the small flaws in the wood. Let it dry completely. This process will take a little more time than the regular acrylic primer because of the product density. After drying, you will get a very smooth surface.

Treat the inside of the box with lazure. We love this product - the lazure not only tones the tree to show the natural tree vein but also nourishes and protects the wood surfaces.  The good thing is that you can use the lazure as the basis for further decoration if you want - a topic we will be talking about in some future projects.

The next step we will continue is decorating with the two-step, self-crackling- paint. We start with step one.
The first step in this system is the base on which, figuratively speaking, the second layer of paint will crack. The forms of cracks you want to achieve depending on the thickness of the layer you have applied - the thick layers of step one guarantees deep and bulk cracks, respectively, a thinner layer will bring finer cracks. Allow drying by its own well at room temperature.

Once the base has dried, we will apply the chosen colour of crackling paint. Cracks are formed during drying. You will notice that the paint starts to crack almost immediately.

The final type and amount of cracks will be obtained after the paint are completely dry.

For our project, we chose decoupage paper in the nuances of the colour of the self-crackling paint. We made a partial decode on the box so that the selected details accentuate the finely cracked surface.

We underline the cracks with antique paste. Apply antique paste with sponge-brush and wipe the excess amount with the cloth.

We will make relief with beer chip-board items. To give a finish to the surface, we will colour the relief elements again with the cracking paints.

We finish our project by highlighting the edges of the box with the appropriate wax paste color
